Ice Thickness Check: A Strong Start for the 2025 International Ice Carousel

The first step toward the 2025 International Ice Carousel has been taken! Yesterday, Roger Morneault, the driving force behind the Northern Maine Ice Busters, traveled to Van Buren, to measure the ice thickness on the St. John River, where this year’s ice carousel will take shape.

And the results? A solid 2 feet of ice! ❄️💪

Why This is Big News

A thick, strong ice base is crucial for the success of an ice carousel. At 24 inches, the ice is sturdy enough to support the heavy equipment, volunteers, and motors needed to carve and rotate the massive disk. With this great start, the team can now move forward with more precise planning and preparation for what promises to be an epic international event!

Chasing Another World Record

The Northern Maine Ice Busters have already cemented their legacy in the ice carousel world, setting records in 2018, 2021, and 2023. But as history has shown, the competition is fierce—with teams from Minnesota, Finland, and Canada all vying for the title.

This year, the St. John River will be the stage for one of the most ambitious ice carousel attempts yet, connecting Van Buren, Maine, and St. Leonard, New Brunswick in a cross-border celebration of winter, engineering, and community spirit.

What’s Next?

With the ice confirmed to be strong and ready, the next steps will involve mapping out the cut, gathering equipment, and assembling the team. The countdown to another legendary Ice Busters creation has officially begun!
